When I set out to make this project focused on my mothers immigration to the United States I realized that I never quite knew the story or the intricacies behind her reasonings. A decision she made to leave everything she knew as comfortable to come to the United States at 19. Now my mother who has been in this country for 40+ years with two first generation children, it’s hard to believe that it wasn’t until recently that I really began to understand and unpack the potential weight, burden and struggles that go along with immigrating. Even with someone whom you are deeply connected to there can remain a series of unanswered questions. In an effort to try and learn more about my mother coming to the US as a teenager for the first time and continue larger topics of memory and family history, I dove in.
